What are hemorrhoids?

Hemorrhoids are swollen and inflamed veins in or around the rectum or anus that can cause discomfort, itching and bleeding. Internal hemorrhoids form in the lining of the anus and rectum, while external ones form under the skin around the opening of the anus and may cause pain.
